At the death of the emperor’s favourite wife, during the birth of their 14th child, the emperor placed the whole of India into a state of mourning for 2 years then decided to construct ‘the most beautiful building in the world’ as a tribute to his beloved wife. Built mainly from white marble, this precious stone gives it a shimmering array of colour that changes at different times of day.
