These ruins were thought to be inhabited in the 1400s, pre-Spanish settlers. It was then rediscovered in the early 1900s and opened to the public. Urquhart Castle is a majestic piece of architecture built overlooking the mysterious Loch ness, home to the famous ‘loch ness monster’ or ‘Nessie’. The surrounding area is surrounded in intrigue; St Columba was believed to have driven ‘Nessie’ into the depths of the loch in the 6th century along with many other interesting stories from the past. There are cairns found among the ruins that are almost certainly more than 4000 years old, making it one of the oldest ruins in existence today.
