Giants Causeway in Antrim Ireland is host to one of the natural wonders of the world. It is hear in coast that thousands of hexagonal columnar stones are perfectly positioned together. It is only relatively recently that the cause has been discovered. They were in fact formed over 60 million years ago by volcanic activity where basalt lava quickly cooled leaving this wonderful phenomenon. However popular legend is that there once lived a giant that created the beginning of a causeway to cross to the Isle of Staffa where another giant existed.
The Isle of Staffa’s legend coincides with the Irish causeway myth. This is the other end of the great causeway. Legend has it that a feud over power had begun between ‘Fingal’ the giant of Scotland and ‘Oonagh’ the giant of Ireland. To commence battle they both decided to create a giant Causeway to bridge the watery gap and establish who was the mightiest. However upon completion the giant of Ireland could see he was no match for Fingal and feigned slumber to avoid fighting and tricked the superior giant into going back to Staffa destroying the causeway as he went, thus leaving only the remains of the beginning and end on each side.
